"Classic Japanese Porcelain" from: AUD$63.49

Kodansha International
Classic Japanese Porcelain Description: Imari and Kakiemon are among the best-known and collectible porcelains in the world. They are produced in the Arita area of Kyushu, a region in Japan that has been the mecca of domestic porcelain production since the seventeenth century. Its explosive development was nothing less than a marvel, given that in 1590 only rough stoneware agricultural and utility pots were being produced by a handful of kilns scattered around the country. But by 1650, Japan was producing some of the world`s most sophisticated porcelains. The hallmark style of Imari and Kakiemon is bright yet subtle red enamel, the delicate balance between decorated and white areas, and the painstaking care taken over every stagefrom refining the clay to the enamel firing. The first influences on porcelain wares produced in Japan were from the Korean potters who brought with them their sophisticated firing techniques and cobalt underglaze decoration. Japanese potters then incorporated many of the Chinese overglaze enamel techniques into these designs, and the distinctive style of Kyushu appeared in just a few decades. The porcelains were shipped through the port of Imari. Over time, wares from Arita became known by that name and the porcelain from Kakiemon kiln were particularly appreciated for their artistic designs. As these wares were produced in great numbers almost exclusively for export, they became extremely popular in the West, especially between the seventeenth and the nineteenth centuries, eventually inspiring Western porcelain design itself. Classic Japanese Porcelain is a beautiful visual overview of the history, techniques, and distinguishing features of both Imari and Kakiemon wares and includes photographs ofsome of the oldest and finest examples to be found anywhere in the world. A highly informative survey on the world-famous Imari and Kakiemon wares by a leading Japanese authority.... Read More about the "Classic Japanese Porcelain" on the The Nile Book Store Website
