Captain Cook Coin Collection Description: In 1768, James Cook took command of HMS Endeavour and sailed for the Pacific at the behest of the Royal Society to observe the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. Cook also carried secret orders to find the fabled great southern continent, chart its coastline and return to England with examples of the wildlife found there.
