iMovie 08 is TERRIBLE and a step backward

    Written by SB from Lisle

    12/08/2007

While almost every Apple and Mac product I have used is first rate, well designed, and really intuitive, the new iMovie 08 is a MARead moreJOR disappointment. The new iMovie 08 is a watered down, light version of the previous iMovie HD, which was outstanding and one of Apple's true triumphs. Potential buyers need to beware that iMovie 08 does not have the best features that are built in the older version (iMovie HD): timeline, audio controls for cross soundtracking/volume, and timing control of transitions. The new iMovie 08 has few new features and really no improvements for video production that I can see. This is the first real disappointment I have had with an Apple product. For a new Mac user, the new weak version may be OK, but for those of us who have used previous versions of iMovie, this is a big setback.

The other features in iLife, iWeb and iPhoto ARE improvements and worthy of the upgrade. It is unfortunate that a decision was made to change to a light version of iMovie, that is really useless for me (and anyone who used iMovie HD for great movies with many special effects).

Finally, I will add that to Apple's credit, they do support the more powerful, robust, and useful iMovie HD (which allows for more better editing, more features/options, and is more intuitive). It might be that in the future, the new light version (iMovie 08) and the more robust and professional iMovie HD may work together in a new program (and one that is easy to use, unlike the complex Final Cut Express).

Back to the drawing boards, iMovie team! Bravo iWeb and iPhoto!

Really, Really Needs to be Patched

Written by NB from Grand Haven

I bought this at an Apple store less than 3 hours after the Keynote and I was all excited. I started with iPhoto, and I love it. Read more I photo worked great and I instantly created a web gallery (which is totally awesome).

Then I opened iMovie and all I got was a spinning beach ball. Didn't really care because I don't use it that much anyway.

Then things got really bad. I opened iWeb and it completely borked my existing website (that I use with dot mac). Luckily, I had backups of the files on my MacBook Pro, but they are useless because iWeb crashes everytime it tries to upgrade the files!

My suggestion, if your a big iWeb user, is too read the discussions in Apple support, because it seems that everyone who uses it with an existing site is having serious issues, from losing pages to system hang-ups and crashes.

We are all keeping our fingers crossed for a patch from Apple, hopefully sooner than later!

Ilife 08 extremely buggy. Wait for update to install.

This is a very buggy group of software. Don't even attempt to run iweb if you have been using an older version. It will destroy Read moreyour old site completely. If you still want to try it, then you better backup your old domain somewhere safe first. I photo works reasonably well, but still has some annoying bugs. Imovie is very slow on an imac G5. Wouldn't use this thing unless you have a newer intel machine. No experience with garage band. This is the worst update bug wise to the ilife sweet since it war first introduced. If it doesn't crash the new features are nice.
